A man was arrested after an apparent collision between two passengers near a tram in Central led to a physical confrontation on Sunday afternoon, with one man taken to hospital after being injured.
The incident happened near the junction of Des Voeux Road Central and Jubilee Street, where footage circulating online showed two men involved in a struggle on the pavement.
In the video, a man wearing a light coloured top can be seen on the ground while another man, dressed in a dark top and shorts and carrying a blue backpack, holds him down. A police vehicle then arrives at the scene, and officers step out to intervene.
One officer appears to signal to the man in the dark clothing to release the other man. He then gets up, while the man who had been on the ground rises and holds the left side of his face, apparently in pain.
Police said they received a report at about 4.15pm on Sunday concerning a dispute between two men at the junction. The report also stated that someone had been injured.
Officers arrived and found one of the men injured at the scene. He was taken to Ruttonjee Hospital while conscious for medical treatment.
Police arrested the other man on suspicion of common assault.
According to sources, both men were about 48 years old. The incident reportedly began when one of the men, surnamed Tse, was attempting to run towards a tram and apparently collided with another man, surnamed Ho, who had just stepped off the tram.
What happened next quickly escalated from a collision into an argument.
Sources said Ho allegedly punched Tse during the dispute. Tse suffered abrasions to his right elbow and the back of his hand.
The circumstances surrounding the confrontation remained under police investigation.
Dispute began near tram in Central
The incident took place in one of Hong Kong's busiest commercial areas, where pedestrians, buses, trams and other road users regularly converge along Des Voeux Road Central.
The location near Jubilee Street is particularly busy during the day, with passengers frequently moving between the pavement and tram stops. A brief collision between pedestrians can therefore happen in a crowded area, but in this case the disagreement reportedly developed into a physical confrontation.
Video footage shared online drew attention to the incident because it captured part of the struggle before police arrived.
The footage does not by itself establish what happened immediately before the two men came to blows. However, police confirmed that they were called following a dispute involving two men and that an injury had been reported.
Officers subsequently separated the men and arranged medical assistance for the injured person.
The arrested man was taken into custody on suspicion of common assault. An arrest does not mean that the suspect has been convicted, and the circumstances of the alleged assault remain subject to investigation.

Injured man taken to Ruttonjee Hospital
Police said the injured man remained conscious when officers found him.
He was taken to Ruttonjee Hospital for treatment. Sources identified him as Tse and said he had abrasions on his right elbow and the back of his hand following the confrontation.
The available information does not indicate the full extent of his injuries or whether he required further treatment after arriving at hospital.
The other man, identified by sources as Ho, was arrested in connection with the alleged assault.
Police investigations into street disputes typically focus on establishing how the confrontation began, whether force was used and the circumstances surrounding any injuries. Investigators may also examine video recordings and statements from people who witnessed the incident.
In this case, footage circulating online could provide investigators with information about the moments after the confrontation had already begun, although it does not necessarily show the events leading up to the alleged punch.

Online footage captures police intervention
The video shows how quickly officers moved to break up the confrontation after the police vehicle reached the scene.
The man wearing the dark top and carrying the blue backpack was seen holding the other man on the ground. After officers arrived, he released him and stood up.
The other man then got to his feet and was seen holding the left side of his face.
The short clip does not provide a complete account of the incident. It shows the physical struggle and the subsequent police intervention, but the reported collision between the two men occurred before the footage captured the confrontation.
That distinction is important as the police investigation continues. A video showing part of an incident may establish what happened during those seconds without establishing the events that triggered the dispute.
According to sources, the reported sequence began when Tse was trying to reach a tram and collided with Ho as Ho was getting off.
An argument followed, and Ho allegedly punched Tse.
Police investigation continues
The case comes amid continuing police efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the altercation.
The initial report was made at 4.15pm, and officers were dispatched to the junction after being told that two men were involved in a dispute and that someone had been injured.
One man was subsequently taken to Ruttonjee Hospital, while the other was arrested on suspicion of common assault.
Further investigation will determine whether additional evidence, witness accounts or video footage changes the understanding of what happened before and during the confrontation.
For now, the known sequence is relatively clear: an apparent collision near a tram was followed by an argument, the dispute turned physical, one man was injured and police intervened.
The case also illustrates how quickly a minor disagreement in a crowded public area can escalate into an incident requiring police and medical attention.
What do you think should be done to prevent disputes from escalating into violence in busy public areas?
