Japanese specialty coffee roasters will take centre stage in Tsuen Wan this autumn as The Mills joins lifestyle platform BGBMHK to present the Urban Brew Summit 2026, bringing about 50 coffee roasters and artisanal food brands from Japan and Hong Kong together for an eight day festival.
The event will run over two four day periods, from September 24 to 27 and October 1 to 4, covering the Mid Autumn Festival and National Day Golden Week. The programme combines a ticketed international coffee showcase with a free public marketplace featuring Hong Kong coffee shops, micro roasters, dessert makers, food vendors and music experiences.
The main attraction will be the Overseas Coffee Experience Zone, where visitors can meet independent Japanese roasters and sample coffees prepared by Japanese baristas. Several participating businesses will make their Hong Kong debut at the summit, giving local coffee drinkers an opportunity to discover producers that have built reputations within Japan's specialty coffee scene.

Japanese roasters arrive in Tsuen Wan
The Japanese lineup stretches across several coffee producing and roasting communities, including Tokyo, Kyoto, Kanagawa, Matsumoto, Kanazawa, Yamanashi and Iriomote Island in Okinawa.
Among the featured names is Dark Arts Coffee Japan, the only overseas branch of the London born coffee label. Its roasting team from Hayama in Kanagawa will be present during the event, allowing visitors to meet the people behind its Japanese operation and taste its coffees.
Kanagawa based REDPOISON will introduce its Solid roasting system, a patented technique developed by Tomomichi Morifuji, a former jewellery designer. The system is designed to bring out natural sweetness while maintaining clarity in the finished cup.
Tokyo based Acid Coffee Tokyo will also join the showcase. The roastery is known for ultra light roasting and a wide selection of single origin coffees. Veteran barista Tsukada will lead the brand's presence, with coffees selected for the balance between acidity and sweetness.
The festival will also bring a taste of Okinawa to Hong Kong through coffee etomoiri, a roastery based on remote Iriomote Island. Award winning roasting master Hikaru Mochizuki operates the brand and will present coffees shaped by the roastery's distinctive island setting.
From Kanazawa, Nonstop Coffee Stand will introduce its approach to light roasting. Founder Fumiya Yamamoto previously worked as an IT engineer before moving into coffee, establishing a roastery focused on Melbourne style light roasts and a more relaxed coffee culture within Japan's historic neighbourhoods.
Other Japanese participants include Matsumoto's High Five Coffee Stand, which will present espresso made with anaerobically fermented coffees. Yamanashi roastery the;kokubo will bring its deeper and more balanced roasting style, while Tokyo's Shinkiro Coffee Group will showcase its rotating artisan model.
The programme will also feature Cafec by Sanyo Sangyo, a Japanese coffee equipment manufacturer. Its president, Shigeji Nakatsuka, is scheduled to lead brewing demonstrations during the festival.

Hong Kong coffee culture gets its own showcase
The international programme will be accompanied by a large free admission marketplace on the first floor of Mill 6.
More than 40 Hong Kong specialty coffee shops, small roasteries and dessert businesses are expected to participate. The marketplace is designed to give local operators a platform alongside the visiting Japanese brands, creating a broader picture of the city's growing specialty coffee scene.
Visitors will also be able to sample food beyond coffee. Lisbon bakery Manteigaria will operate a dedicated pop up at the event, bringing its traditional Portuguese egg custard tarts to the festival.
Hong Kong beverage businesses will use the summit to introduce seasonal creations. IF Coffee will serve a peanut and caramel glutinous rice ball drink, while Soul Coffee & Matcha will present drinks combining coffee and tea based flavours.
Phoenix Coffee Roastery will also participate. The small batch roaster began as a bicycle based coffee stand on Peng Chau before establishing a workshop in Kwai Chung. At Urban Brew Summit, it will feature single origin coffees from emerging origins including Yunnan, Nepal and the Philippines.
Its coffee offering will be accompanied by French confectionery from Wave Patisserie, adding another food element to the local marketplace.

Brewers Cup brings competition to the festival
Coffee preparation will move from tasting tables to the competition stage on September 27, when the summit hosts the official Cafec Hong Kong Brewers Cup 2026.
The event will bring local baristas together for live brewing demonstrations and judging. Nakatsuka, president of Cafec, is scheduled to attend the competition, giving participants and spectators the chance to watch brewing techniques and judging take place in person.
For visitors who prefer music to competition, Basement X will operate a separate pop up on the ground floor of Mill 6.
The space will combine specialty pour over coffee with a collection of more than 100 vinyl records. Visitors can browse and listen to records spanning jazz, rhythm and blues and hip hop, turning the coffee experience into a broader music and lifestyle gathering.
The combination of coffee, food and vinyl gives the festival several entry points for visitors who may not consider themselves specialist coffee enthusiasts. Someone arriving for the food market, for example, can also explore the local roasters or spend time at the vinyl pop up without purchasing a ticket for the international tasting zone.
Free marketplace, paid tasting sessions
The general marketplace, food stalls and music experiences will be open to the public without an admission charge during both festival weekends.
These areas will operate from noon until 8:30 pm throughout the scheduled festival dates, giving visitors several hours each day to explore the stalls and activities at Mill 6.
The Overseas Coffee Experience Zone will follow a different format. Located on the first floor of Mill 4, the zone will operate through dedicated sessions with attendance limited to 40 people during each time slot.
The restricted capacity is intended to create a more focused tasting environment and reduce queues around the participating Japanese roasters.
Standard admission costs HK$220. The ticket includes three 80 millilitre pour over tastings prepared on site by Japanese baristas, together with an official tasting cup.
An early bird package will be available for HK$350. In addition to the tasting session, buyers will receive a commemorative tote bag containing randomly selected merchandise. Possible items include 100 gram bags of Japanese specialty coffee beans, Dark Arts Coffee clothing, drip bags and branded caps.
Advance reservations will be handled through the NF Touch mobile application, with tickets and packages available on a first come, first served basis.

A meeting point for Japan and Hong Kong coffee
Urban Brew Summit 2026 arrives at a time when specialty coffee has developed well beyond the traditional café setting. Small roasters now build identities around specific roasting methods, brewing equipment, single origin sourcing and distinctive approaches to serving customers.
The festival's structure reflects that shift. Instead of focusing only on coffee sales, it brings together roasting demonstrations, professional competition, food, independent brands and music across The Mills complex.
For Hong Kong visitors, the Japanese showcase offers direct access to roasters from cities and regions that are rarely represented together at a single local event. For participating Hong Kong businesses, the free marketplace provides an opportunity to introduce their own products to an audience drawn by the international lineup.
The first festival weekend begins on September 24 and runs through September 27, followed by the second session from October 1 to October 4. With limited capacity for the paid international tasting sessions, visitors interested in sampling the Japanese roasters should secure their reservations through the NF Touch app before available sessions fill.
