A 19 year old man holding an Indian passport has been arrested at Hong Kong International Airport after police accused him of stealing a passenger’s checked luggage from the baggage claim area.
The passenger reported the missing suitcase to police on Sept. 29 after discovering that it had disappeared from the arrivals hall. The luggage contained foreign currency worth about HK$78,000, along with several items of luxury clothing, according to police.
Airport police launched an investigation after receiving the report and reviewed extensive security camera footage from the airport. The footage helped investigators identify the suspected thief and trace his movements within the airport.
Officers later intercepted the suspect at Hong Kong International Airport and arrested him. Police said they recovered all of the stolen property during the operation.
The man remains in custody while officers continue questioning him. The third team of the Airport District Criminal Investigation Team is handling the case.

Missing suitcase reported after arrival
The incident began when the passenger realized that a checked suitcase was missing after arriving at Hong Kong International Airport.
Checked luggage normally enters the airport baggage handling system before being transferred to the designated collection area. Once passengers reach the arrivals hall, they collect their bags from the assigned carousel before proceeding through the airport.
In this case, the suitcase did not reach its owner. The passenger subsequently reported the disappearance to police on Sept. 29.
The contents made the missing luggage particularly significant. Police said it contained foreign currency equivalent to approximately HK$78,000 as well as luxury clothing.
The report gave investigators a clear starting point for their inquiry. Airport police examined available security footage as they worked to determine what happened to the suitcase after it entered the baggage claim area.
Hong Kong International Airport handles large numbers of passengers and checked bags each day, making surveillance footage an important investigative resource when property goes missing.
Security footage leads police to suspect
Investigators reviewed extensive camera footage as part of the inquiry. The surveillance material allowed officers to identify a 19 year old suspect believed to have taken the luggage.
Police then moved to intercept the man at the airport.
Officers arrested him at Hong Kong International Airport and recovered the property reported stolen by the passenger. Police said the foreign currency and luxury clothing were recovered during the operation.
The police operation also illustrates how investigators can use airport surveillance systems to trace movements following reports of theft in busy public areas.
The suspect has not been convicted of an offense. He remains in custody while police conduct further questioning and continue their investigation.

Police warn of serious consequences for theft
Hong Kong police have reminded the public that theft is a serious criminal offense.
Under Hong Kong law, a person convicted of theft can face a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
The warning comes as investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the missing luggage and the suspect’s alleged involvement.
At this stage, the arrest represents an allegation rather than a finding of guilt. Any eventual criminal proceedings would determine whether the evidence supports a conviction.
For passengers, the incident also illustrates the importance of keeping valuable belongings secure while travelling. Items such as large amounts of cash, expensive clothing and other valuables can create significant losses when luggage goes missing.
Passengers collecting checked bags are generally advised to check that their luggage belongs to them before leaving the baggage collection area and to report missing property promptly.
A quick report can give investigators an opportunity to review surveillance footage while relevant movements and locations can still be traced.
Investigation continues
Police have recovered all of the property involved in the reported theft, but the investigation is not yet complete.
The 19 year old suspect remains in custody for questioning as officers from the Airport District Criminal Investigation Team continue examining the case.
The investigation will determine the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the suitcase and the suspect’s alleged role in the incident.
The case also serves as a reminder for travellers to remain alert when collecting checked luggage, particularly when carrying valuable possessions. If a suitcase is missing, reporting it to airport staff and police as soon as possible can provide investigators with information they can use to begin tracing what happened.
For passengers travelling through Hong Kong International Airport, checking luggage carefully before leaving the arrivals area remains a simple step that can help prevent confusion and speed up the reporting process if something is missing.
